Custom Made Computers
You can have a custom built
computer for about what you would pay for a computer off the shelf! I will explain the process to you. When you hear how easy it is.
I am sure you are going to want one!!
You tell my what you want from standard stock components. I assemble the components, and install the operating system software!!
Making computers from stock “parts” is hardly new! This is the way all of the major computer companies do business! They are not
manufacturing companies. They actually make very little… if anything! If you want to give them a name, I suggest you call them
assembly plants. They buy in bulk and assemble the components. The actual “parts” makers would really surprise you! Computer
components, are made in countries scattered all around the world. This computer assembly procedure is the de facto process used
by most manufacturing companies. Today, almost everything is made this way, from your car to your... computer! Why did I bring
this up? I want to let you know that I can assemble a computer to equal or surpass a computer made by anyone!!
Enough of that… lets get started! I am going to explain how you do this in steps.
- Step 1) Start with a motherboard, the motherboard, is your computer! It determines all of the other components you can
use in your computer! The one other component that is critical at this time is the CPU (central processing unit) or processor!! You
could start with the processor and match the motherboard to your processor if you desire. Other motherboard considerations: PCI
slots, this is where you insert “cards” to use peripheral devices. ISA slots, an older format for “cards”. Some motherboards still have
one or two of these slots for your “old cards”. I do not recommend boards with ISA slots. About the only thing you may need an ISA
slot for is a modem. Don’t compromise your motherboard. Modem cards are very cheap; buy a new one on a PCI card! AGP slot, this
slot is for those sophisticated video graphic cards. These cards enhance what you see on the screen. If you are into 3D games or
DVD movies or any visual imaging; an AGP slot should be on your motherboard. Graphic cards prices range from $50 to several
hundred dollars! All AGP cards have memory built into the boards. This is because images use up large chunks of memory. This
“extra” memory helps your entire system! Look for a card with a lot of memory. If money is an issue, you don’t have to immediately
use the AGP slot. You can instead use a PCI slot to get a video image on your screen. Buy a good AGP card later! Motherboard
BUS is another important consideration. This is simply how fast data travel on your motherboard. This speed determines the speed
of the processor you can use. You use the BUS speed to match your motherboard to a processor. RAID slot, if you intend to use
this computer as a server anytime in the future, include a RAID slot on your motherboard. RAM memory, almost any board will
accommodate enough memory for your needs. However, if you are going to be using a lot of video imaging or using the computer
as a server, maximum ram supported should be considered. Another option is to get a motherboard with the video, audio and a
LAN (Local Area Network) connection built into the motherboard. The large manufacturing companies use these cheap
motherboards, widely. They use them to make the computers they sell in the $400 to $700 range, for a complete system.
While they perform well, they have very little upgrade possibilities. If for instance, you loose the sound, the motherboard must
be replaced.
I realize that I am giving you a lot of options that you may not understand; but as I said earlier, the motherboard and the processor
is your computer!!
To further confuse you, there are numerous types of boards! I am not going to go into that can of worms! Unless you are an adept
tech, I suggest you stick with “socket A” motherboards for AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) processors and “socket 370 and P4
(Pentium 4) 478 PIN” motherboards for Intel processors. You can also buy what is called a “barebones” system. Here you have a
matched motherboard/processor with RAM chip(s), a hard drive and a case w/power supply. With such a system, all you need to
do is install the operating system (windows 95,98,ME, 2000 etc.), CD drives and the cards you want. We will not be responsible
for such a system if you cannot get it operational. All sales are final for everything we sell, it is not returnable! However, we will
get such a system operational for you at our “repairs” cost.
- Step 2) you now need a case to hold your motherboard/processor. Any ATX Case will hold your motherboard. Case
considerations include: Power Supply (Cases come with a power supply), the range of power supplies is from 145W to 350W+.
I suggest you get at least 250Watts. Case size, the number of bays, for components, is directly related to its size. I suggest
your choice be a Mid-Tower or Full-Tower Case.
- Step 3) A hard drive is the next consideration. The faster the drive spins the more it will cost! The most common type is the
IDE type; you
also have the SCSI type. I suggest you get a 30 to 40 GB IDE drive or two smaller drives with that total storage.
The advantage of two drives is that one can be used as a backup, a second person can use one or both can be used as storage.
We sell a switch, which will boot up either drive. If you do get the larger drive, I suggest you partition the drive into 10G parts. It is
quicker to defrag a 10G part than the larger whole thing!
- Step 4) Add some RAM memory chips and you have a “barebones” system. At this point you do not have to worry about
matching components. Anything will work! Your choice of CD drives, tape drives, cards, radio or whatever is limited to the number
of slots (Don’t forget USB connects) you have and your pocketbook!
We will assemble your computer for a cost of $100 plus parts. If you are interested in having us assemble a computer to your
specifications, send a note to Custom Built. Custom built computers must be
paid for in advance! If you already know what you want. Select the parts and pay the labor fee by clicking
here. We will automatically assemble the computer prior to shipping.
Don't forget that we sell factory assembled kits that usually need only the Operating System (OS) software and CD Drives.
Some kits do not include a hard drive. Please read the list of included components in the kit. If you purchase a computer kit/barebone system
that you are unable to complete and want us to finish. We will treat this job as a "repair".
I hope this has been informative.
