
The Railway Standing Committee gathered for its fourth session/inspection on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11:00 am in the conference rooms of the Divisional Superintendent, Pakistan Railways, Lahore and Divisional Superintendent, Workshops Division Mughalpura, Lahore under the leadership of Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan, MNA.
The meeting began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a comprehensive briefing about organizational structure, personnel, jurisdiction, track length, number of stations, inactive sections, punctuality, revenue, land lease earnings, removed encroachments, encroached properties, infrastructure improvements, public facilities, steps to boost land revenue, and the Lahore Division’s work plan for the fiscal year 2024-25, presented by the Divisional Superintendent, Pakistan Railways, Lahore.
The Committee Chairman expressed concerns regarding train punctuality, with the CEO promising improvement efforts. The Committee urged the Ministry to prioritize punctuality. Discussions then moved to anti-encroachment actions, recommending strict measures against illegal occupants of commercial land.
Subsequently, a Committee member inquired about the Ministry’s stance on encroached land, leading to a recommendation for a detailed briefing in the next session. Issues of security and cleanliness at the Dry Port were also raised, with assurances of resolution from the Divisional Superintendent. The Committee further recommended a detailed briefing on public service improvements in the next meeting.
The Committee then toured the Lahore Railway Station and the Old Diesel Locomotive Shed.
Later, the Committee visited the office of the Divisional Superintendent, Workshops Division, Pakistan Railways, Mughalpura. The Superintendent briefed them on the workshops under his jurisdiction. The Secretary, Ministry of Railways, discussed the history of the Workshops Division and announced the cessation of freight wagon imports, now locally produced to Chinese standards in Mughalpura. The Committee Chairman suggested increasing freight train capacity to meet high demand, which was supported by the Secretary. The Committee recommended prioritizing freight trains for revenue generation.
